Yeah. But I somehow can't get it to use a compiler. Netbeans on the
other hand connected easily with Cygwin and MingW.

I have a buddy that's working on getting into C++, and we've got him
set up with CLang and LLVM 2.8 in MinGW. (CLang and LLVM aren't quite
ready to try and work outside of a MinGW environment I think).

He's using Code::Blocks to edit things, and then we can tell it works
cross-platform because I wrote an SCons script to build it against my
Mac's dev toolchain.

If you haven't already explored this option, you might run Linux in a
virtual machine. I aced my x86 Assembler class running Windows XP in a
virtual machine on my Mac (for MASM; translating everything to NASM
wasn't at the top of my list of things to do). It wasn't fast or

Its been a while and congrats on the new job(I'm visiting this group
after a long time). Here, I have joined for a Masters degree program
at University of Kerala, Department of Computer Science. The degree is
called Master of Technology(M.Tech) and is considered the Indian
equivalent to M.S or M.Eng degrees in US/Canada. The specialization
offered here is Digital Image Processing and the first mission for me
is to figure out how to use MatLab. This is the same university where
I did my bachelors(B.Tech degree).

is a start up that will be building CAT scanners. I'm getting the fun/
stress oc the main controller.

For discussion, has anyone does much with the BeagleBoard SBC? I am
lookinginto it for some display controls. It may be overpowered for
what I plan to use it for. I just have a small display (mainly text)
and small keypad (between 6 and 10 keys). So far I've just taken it
out of the box and powered it up. Any comments welcome.

Hi there,

Its been a long time and I finally have something I need to ask
here :)
My question is for people who have or know how to built web
applications in Spring MVC 2.5 from scratch.

Heres the problem. I am trying to configure Spring in my webapp to use
Spring's Annotated controllers. I am using netbeans as my IDE.
As a result of some googling, I got a lot of examples and steps on how
to go about configuring the springs context, etc. But the problem is
that none of them actually works here

I gave the @Controller and @RequestMapping("/login/*") in my
controller class and @RequestMapping(value = "dologin",
method=RequestMethod.GET) for my method I need to get executed when
the action path of my request is "/login/dologin.htm", where *.htm is
the url pattern configured in my Dispatcher Servlet.
As for the spring context, I have the viewResolver defined as the
InternalResourceViewResolver with prefix as "/WEB-INF/jsp/" and
postfix as ".jsp".
I have also used the <context:component-scan base-
package="com.ak.loginapp"> in my spring context file. The classes are
available within the basepackage, inside sub packages called
controller, service, etc. ie, my LoginController is inside <base-
package>.controller.

My project is getting built, but on execution, I keep getting 404
errors and when I tried debugging, I found that the execution control
is not even reaching the controller method. I have tried all examples
that I found from the internet and for all of them I keep getting
this.

Not this group. Actually another one owned by my friends where I'm
moderator. I recently helped him clean up that group and it was more
than 500 spams which we had to purge. Right when I thought I was done
with spams, came this one... :(

Hahah, you should try moderating a larger group!

I get more mail from the moderation queue caused by spam than there are messages on this whole group from the Linux Users' Group on Google Groups. And they're all carbon copies of the other spam messages, too. Just links to strange blogspot sites.

Thankfully it looks like Google has added a feature which will try and identify spam and put it into a moderation queue, though we still have all new users moderated. We've yet to discuss trying a change (to see if it will keep filtering spam even if not all new members are moderated).

I just saw the website of the University of Auckland, NZ, looking for
Masters admission requirements ofcourse. I got surprised to see that
they offer Ph.D programmes to people with just bachelors degree. They
put Masters as an optional requirement; and this is a university that
got ranked as the top 50 of the world in 2008(currently at 67 in
2009). Am I missing something here, or is this normal. (I do have Ph.D
as my target and masters is supposed to be a milestone in that path.

Good for you.

The school I am at is more like a stepping stone. Some students that
are not really ready for a full time four year college program choose
a school like this. The Office classes are more for business and
nursing majors. They need the basic tools and introduction to the
concepts of computers, but not really to know how to program them.

[Progav:1506] when RAID controllers go bad

Well actually it may not have been all the RAID controller's fault.

We recently had a server crash. Why?
Although the container was set for RAID 5, somehow the last time a
drive went bad, it was never actually added back into the array. So
Monday a second drive went south.
<crash>
Manage to get the array mounted but the database files are all
corrupt.

Okay, we've wanted to upgrade the drive, so install three new
15,000RPM drives, make RAID5 array container, create database, and
load backups. Everything is working.

Okay, the software is on a two drive Mirror array. Can we swap one
drive out for a faster one, let the raid controller mirror down to
that drive, swap out the other drive and again let the controller do
its thing. Clients are off line anyway. How long can this really take?

Swap out (cold swap) one mirrored drive. Try to add the new drive into
the container. It won't accept it. 8^( Ah it is like 0.5GB smaller.
That must be it.

Swap the out mirrored drive back in. Controller will not take it. The
somehow the controller reports only one container, the RAID 5, not the
Mirror container! Now we have a database, but not the OS and DBMS to
run it!!!!!!!!!!!

On the bright side, we did replace both mirror drives. Now just need
to complete the LINUX/Oracle installations. Don't worry, the clients
were more to another server until this upgrade is done.

We are now planning on replacing the server to just get rid of that
brand/revision of controller. It is a PERQ (Perteq?) RAID controller.
It seems just too easy to mess up with this one. Very counter
intuitive.

I've been using Mac for so long now that I've adopted the "if it works

EXIM mail server. Our customers would not think much of us if we ran

understand and install the EXIM mail server). Meanwhile I'm marketing.

Hi there...

I joined accenture in Aug-2008. Have been working there since then...
Being at the lower end of the pyramid, I am not given any choices as
to what I can work on... So, currently, I am working as a Programmer
in Java for a telecom client...

Basically I work with the Batch Framework(a slight variation of the
spring batch framework customized exclusively for the system)... I am
in-charge of maintaining and enhancing the framework ("BFK-Factory" as
we call it here)... This had been going on till recently, when I got
shifted to the Fix team as no more enhancements were necessary... So,
now I work with Kenan system and the other customized builds attached
to it... Basically my job now is to fix each and every defects of the
complete solution(So, 18 to 20 hours of work per day; and I suppose
you all can guess why ;) )...

I'll go first.

I got a summer job writing iPhone apps with a startup company called
Munera (http://www.munera.com/). I've been using Objective-C and the
Apple libraries, and they're actually quite nice. The best way to
describe Objective-C is C with Smalltalk-style object-oriented
paradigms bolted on top. It's an extremely minimalist environment. I
actually find it to be quite an enjoyable environment because of the
manner in which the whole system "just works."

There are quite a lot of things that are remarkably simple to
implement in Objective-C and the Apple libraries. One of the things
that CS junkies like me will notice right off the bat is that there
are only two standard data structures implemented: NSArray and
NSDictionary. Curiously enough it was appear that both have changing
internal data stores. So they alter the data store type (between
Linked Lists, Trees, actual arrays, etc.) based on the performance the
data structure is receiving. Apple's implementation is closed-source,
but it's wicked fast.

Furthermore their higher-level libraries are similarly feature-
complete. Complex tasks such as binding buttons to actions is
absolutely trivial because of the elegance of Interface Builder - you
literally just drag and drop! Speaking of Interface Builder, it's a
real marvel by itself! I have never found a paradigm quite like it,
and I have to say it's the only GUI builder I've used that I really
like.

Interface Builder's biggest paradigm shift is to generate archived
objects (via serialization) instead of code which creates those
objects. These objects are stored to a NIB file, which is an endian-

Additionally I am also responsible for their J2EE stuff, so I've spent
the past month writing servlets which literally spit out XML for use
by an iPhone client. For this we've been using GlassFish v2.1 and the
Hibernate framework.

GlassFish is all I could as for in a piece of software. It's simple
and it works.

Hibernate is another story. Hibernate is absolutely fantastic in that
it lets you write simple XML describing the objects you want to store
in a database, then you write some Plain Old Java Objects to
manipulate at runtime. The objects are created and persisted using
run-time type reflection with checking from that XML. It's remarkably
simple because Hibernate will even create the tables in the database
if they're not already there. The Hibernate framework is also
remarkably fast at what it does, and handles inter-object relations
(such as one-to-one, many-to-one, and one-to-many relationships) very
easily with fun features like lazy-loading to keep run-time memory to
a minimum. It uses a custom implementation of the Java List and Set
interfaces to make the run-time lazy-loading work.

Hibernate is merciless though - one mistake can cause massive errors
that are hard to trace down. The mistakes aren't even terribly clear
- sometimes it can be cognitive dissonance on your part, but if you
haven't read the Hibernate manual incredibly carefully you won't
realize your own mistake. I suppose Hibernate could be a bit more
forgiving on that front, but I suppose you can't have everything.

So that's my status update. What're you folks up to? Something
interesting I bet!

1) Ensure the canvas you're trying to display is visible. If
canvas.isVisible() == true, then you have a problem.

2) Ensure you're using the correct function call. IIRC it's something
like setContentPanel, but a) I've never used JavaME and b) it's so
late at night I should get a nobel prize for formulating a halfway
coherent sentence.

I did not know that even war defense decisions would have to be
approved by the ruling coalition before action taken. So there is some
advantage to Parliamentary government. But sadly the current US
president would be informed of the missile launch and order a counter
strike against Iran!

Well, being programmers, we often forget that spoken language isn't
like a programming language: there is no compiler to smack us when we
mess up. Language evolves and changes not based on a committee
(though Spanish-speakers would have you believe otherwise) but
exclusively based on how people speak it. English is currently in a
rapid state of flux because it's the de-facto primary language on the
Internet. So many people are learning it, and so many other languages
are being grafted into it that it's really rapidly changing.
Education and grammatical rules are helping to slow that change, but
we need a certain defined framework to alleviate ambiguity in the
communication. But just a reminder: correctness in a spoken language
is relative. I'd go so far as to call "Indian" English is dialect of
the Queen's English. It's not wrong. It's just different.

Never forget: language serves the speaker, not the other way around.

It can be helpful to learn things outside of Comp.Sci. Check out some
other areas. If you take a summer job, try to learn about the industry
of the company. What issues do they deal with? how do they use
computers to deal with that?

Or try learning a programming language totally different from what you
use now. You seem to be limited so far to the C family of languages.
Try PYTHON or ADA or LISP.

Try doing some programming on different platforms. LINUX for example.
or Open VMS. WINDOWS is such a poor first choice OS.

Or try installing and learning a database. Oracle is available, or
Firebird or even mySQL.

You have a lot of choices. Have fun with it.

satellites would inform the Soviet army in 3 seconds and in less than

seconds Soviet counter missiles would be on their way.This was their
scenario.................

But if there is a nuclear war between India and Pakistan.

The Pakistan army decides to launch a nuke-missile towards India.

They don't need any permission from their government, and promptly
order the countdowns.

Indian technology is highly advanced.

In less than 8 seconds, Indian army detects the Pak Countdown and
decides to launch a missile in retribution.

But they need permission from the Government of India.

They submit their request to the Indian President. The President
forwards it to the Cabinet.

The Prime Minister calls an emergency Lok Sabha session. The LS meets,
but due to several walkouts and severe protests by the opposition, it
gets adjourned and adjourned indefinitely.

The President asks for a quick decision.

In the mean time, the Pak missile failed to take off due to technical
failure. Their attempts for a relaunch are still on.

Just then the Indian ruling party is reduced to a minority because a
party that was giving outside support withdraws it.

The President asks the PM to prove his majority within a week.

As the ruling party fails to win the confidence vote, a caretaker
government is installed.

The caretaker PM decides to permit the armed forces to launch a
nuclear
missile.

But the Election Commission says that a caretaker government can not
take such a decision because elections are at hand.

A Public Interest Litigation is filed in the Supreme Court alleging
misuse of power by the Election Commission.

The Supreme Court comes to the rescue of the PM, and says the acting
PM
is authorized to take this decision in view of the emergency facing
the
nation.

Just then one of the Pak missiles successfully took off, but it fell
367 miles away from the target, on its own governm

Fortunately there were no casualties as no employee had reached the
office that early.

In any case, the nuclear core of the missile had detached somewhere in
flight.

The Pakistan army is now trying to get better technologies from China
and USA.

The Indian Government, taking no chances, decides to launch a nuclear
missile of its own, after convening an all-party meeting.

This time all the parties agree.

Its three months since the army had sought permission. But as
preparations begin, "pro-humanity", "anti-nuclear" activists come out
against
the Government's decision.

Human chains are formed and Rasta rokos organised.

In California and Washington endless e-mails are sent to Indians like
Kalingaa and all of you, condemning the government and mentioning
"Please forward it to as many Indians as possible".

On the Pakistan side, the missiles kept malfunctioning. Some missiles
deviate from target due to technical failures or high-speed wind
blowing
over Rajasthan.

Many of them land in the Indian Ocean killing some fishes.

A missile (smuggled from USA) is pressed into service.

Since the Pakistan army is unable to understand its software, it hits
its original destination: Russia .

Russia successfully intercepts the missile and in retaliation launches
a nuclear missile towards Islamabad.

So what are you good at? What systems work do you like to do?

Instead of coding projects, could your project be more hardware
related?

pet robot: Building a small robot to navigate around obstacles like
chair legs. (optical sensors involve some math programming, proximity
sensors involve custom interfaces)
your own video board: build a simple graphics processor (mixed digital
and analog)
coffee warmer: build a small control system to keep a cup of coffee at
just the right temperature (digital with some high power)
Helping hand: a robotic arm to pick things off high shelves. Useful
for handicapped, elderly, and short people)

Well, then I assume that you're using Visual Studio. So, you have a
lot of things you could do. You could learn about database
programming and SQL Server, you could learn about graphics and
technical art (programming visual effects) with DirectX, or you could
do what is probably a better idea and lean about how to make graphical
user interfaces.

you would learn to make in the last suggested activity. Now, when I

Unless you're asking for help in writing a shell script to mass-email

Usenet group for biology and conservation. Those people already know
the proper channels to stop the destruction of our natural world.

I've just written to Ratan Tata asking him to not to go ahead with building a port in Dhamra, Orissa, dangerously close to one of the world's largest sea turtle nesting grounds for the Olive Ridley Sea Turtle. I think its a good idea for Mr. Tata to move the port to another location rather than endanger the turtles.

By living up to the Tatas' environmental legacy, Ratan won't just save the highly-endangered Olive Ridley Turtles, he will also end up making Tata a better company.

The only problem is that I can't bring about that change alone. I need help from lots of people, especially you.

It was taking 20+ seconds for me to finish loading all those pictures,
so it's much faster IMHO.

Actually I just tracked down that bug about an hour ago and fixed it.
Works fine now.

They were a surprise bug for me this morning. I had to do the whole
"school" thing, but I was able to fix it in the time between school's
ending and when I actually leave to go home (getting run over in the
parking lot isn't my idea of a great way to die!)

There seems to be some problem with the initial menus. "Content
Navagation" and "Wiki forum" and the items below them all appear on
top of each other in firefox. The menus start with "Login" and "Wiki"

HTLM standards checkers?

Well, it is much faster now.

I made a symbolic link in my web folder to the Trac attachments
directory. Since Apache was instructed to obey symbolic links, it
forwarded to the Trac-managed attachments directory. So now the
images are all handled through Apache (fast) so they're not handled
through Apache->CGI->Trac (not fast).

So it goes faster now.

I also restructured it to have the command-line stuff at the end. I
was only planning for re-submitting it to the Knights of the Red-Ink

Do you know what's there in the way of JNI?

The Java modules themselves will port just fine, but if there's
anything JNI there it'll be a much harder task.

We have got a project where we need to port client portion of standard
TR069 to a target board with ST7109 processor running on linux2.2
version.Some one in the past have developed a simulator version of
this client code on windows and ran it successfully on pentium pc.
The client code is made of java with Java run time environment JRE1.5
update 6.

Now we would like to port the same client code working on windows
pentium pc to ST7109 based board with linux 2.2.

Can some one elaborate me the steps needed for making this run linux?
I am new to both linux and Java,so any help will be greatly
appreciated.

What interface?
What programming language?
What kind of application (program)?

An interface can be a set of files transferred between systems, a
hardware connection, the properties of a object class (e.g. in JAVA),
a user interaction system (GUI - Graphical User Interface), or more.

Help us help you. Your question is just too generic.

It's an issue with my web host. They're the best on the web, but they
only support CGI mode. I tried to make FastCGI work, but no joy. I'd
really like mod_python, which is much faster, but they don't support
that yet.

The problem degenerated to one of those "care to find something
better?" responses. I've searched for something better, but it's just
not out there.

That's actually a very good idea. It'll reduce the clutter a great deal.

Some of those images scaled really oddly. I told them to scale down
to 25% and some of them got bigger, others got really really small.
It made no sense. I tried to fix as many of them as I could, but with
a document so big I knew I had to have missed a few.

First it looks like a run-on sentence. And I think you could drop the
last part about the terminal. (I remember terminal, but few people
even know what they are any more.) In the context of that paragraph I
would just shorten it to:

unnecessary. You even say it there that "... Again, you probably don't
